If Diaperman was the star of the last page, then the Spanker is MVP of this one. Design-wise, the art for him among these four panels is among my favorite art of him in the series. Storywise as well, there is just so much going on here. Much like the Joker thrives upon eliciting a confrontation from Batman, so too does Spanker demonstrate a type of a dependency on Diaperman. For him, victory is not about simply tossing his potion into the water supply, it’s about getting his arch-nemesis to see things from his perspective. In many ways, despite however close he gets, the Spanker will have never truly won until he has brought Diaperman over to his side, which we as the audience know will never happen. Thus, the true tension in the narrative comes from seeing how far the Spanker will go, to what lengths will he go to break Diaperman’s resolve, and conversely we can then see how to what lengths Diaperman will go to stand by his ideals and what sacrifices such a choice will force upon him along the way.
