SPECTRUM #3

PAGE SEVENTEEN

PANEL ONE: Exterior shot of DEL ROCKO’s, a gay campy gay bar, flamingos and pink trailers and gay kitsch neon exterior. Whatever says “fun” and “gay” and “not serious” . There is a HOMELESS MAN with a shopping cart full of trash off to the side. Just so we know he’s there. Welcome to downtown Calgary. RICHIE and THE GANG are just heading in the front door.

REGINA (narr):
“…Del Rocko’s!”

RICHIE:
So where’s Jamie?

REGINA:
He couldn’t make it. Said he had plans.

RICHIE:
Ah. Lucky him.

PANEL TWO: The gang is lined up at the coat check, they have to have their hands stamped before they are allowed in.

REGINA:
Ha ha! Don’t be so nervous.

RICHIE:
I’ve never been to a gay bar before. I’ve never even been to a bar before.

PANEL THREE: DEBRA and DEWAYNE explain the rules. DEBRA is getting her hand stamped by MISS FLO.

DEBRA:
Technically not a bar. It’s a “private club.”

DEWAYNE:
Miss Flo at the door stamps your hand, so they know you won’t be drinking…

PANEL FOUR: DEWAYNE gets his hand stamped by MISS FLO. FLO DEL ROCKO was a living part of Calgary’s queer history, and I’d like the character to be a tribute to her:

DEWAYNE:
And voilà! Just like that, you’re in the club.

MISS FLO:
Della, sweetie! Who’s this new face?

PANEL FIVE: DEWAYNE presents RICHIE to MISS FLO.

DEWAYNE:
This here’s Richie, Mama Flo. He’s from group.

MISS FLO:
Welcome, welcome! You know the rules? No alcohol, and have a great time!

RICHIE:
Yes, ma’am.
