PANEL ONE: NAN gets down to DYLAN’s level and places her hands on his shoulders. DYLAN is paying full attention to her, meeting her eyes.
NAN:
This is important, Dylan. You’re the one who talked to the girl. You’re the one she trusts. It has to be you to do this; that’s just how things work.
DYLAN:
Okay.
PANEL TWO: NAN touches DYLAN on the nose.
NAN:
And tomorrow I want you to go out in the garden and pick some white flowers– only white, mind!-- and go back to her and give them to her.
DYLAN:
Why?
PANEL THREE: NAN has stood up again, and is handing DYLAN a dish towel.
NAN:
So that she keeps liking you. Now I’ll wash, you dry.
PANEL FOUR: NAN and DYLAN doing the dishes.
NARR:
And that was all she would say. I knew it was important–Nan always meant what she said!--but she didn’t like a lot of questions.
PANEL FIVE: DYLAN is on a landline old-school phone, while in the background NAN sits in an easy chair and watches, sipping a glass of whiskey.
NARR:
After the dishes were done, Nan sat and had a glass of whiskey while I called the Council office. I think they almost were gonna hang up on me, but when I said Nan’s name it was like everything got serious all of a sudden.
PANEL SIX: DYLAN tells the story over the phone, gesturing with his free hand. NAN leans in closer to him as if speaking to him from her chair.
NARR:
I told them that the body of the missing Corregan girl from 1901, Melissa, was down at the bottom of a hole underneath a tree in the middle of Oulton’s field. When they asked how I knew, Nan told me to say the words:
DYLAN:
I swear by the Coven it’s true.
