POST-CON REPORT: EDMONTON EXPO 2014

Jeremy manning the table!
Jeremy manning the table!

Whoo!  Another Edmonton Expo come and gone!  Jeremy Thew and Michael McAdam manned the table at the con, and had an excellent time (as usual) with our talented friends Kyle Burles and Mike Rieger.

Although sales were down this year, we noted that attendance was up, with even more potential for expansion.  Thus, we’ll definitely be back in 2015 — who was it that said “90% of life is just showing up?”  You can’t be recognized for your creations if you’re not there to promote them, that’s for sure!

As I write this, Jeremy is busy sketching future print ideas and project covers for our five-weeks-from-now appearance at Bent-Con in Los Angeles, California.  One of the key things all conventions seem to engender is a heightened sense of inspiration for the future, and Edmonton Expo was no different– as soon as we got to my place we started discussing ideas for the next show.

Jeremy goes home today but he’ll be loaded down not just with luggage but with ideas (and my voice whining in his ears to keep a steady drawing schedule).  For my part, I pushed through my lagginess on some writing projects– I’m proud to say THUNDER #5 is in the hands of an ALL-NEW ARTIST.  That’s right.  A new artist is taking the reins for issue 5– watch this space for a promo announcement!

We debuted two new products on the table this show, our FIGHTING MOTHER PUCKERS puck starring –er– Puck from our favorite cartoon, Gargoyles.  We also had the TWILIGHT DETECTIVE AGENCY CASE JOURNAL, a fun blank journal that looks like a detective novel based on our TDA comic.

Speaking of TDA, WE SOLD OUT of issue #1 at the show.  Also, we sold out of the Diaperman Graphic Novel, the

complete collection of Diaperman from webcomic to issue 12 inclusive.  Still popular after all these years!  Watch for an announcement regarding Diaperman coming soon!

I’d like to congratulate the Edmonton Expo staff for a smooth, easy signup process, for being visible and around the whole weekend.  It’s appreciated exhibiting at a show that’s not only popular but knows what it’s doing.  See you in 2015!

HAPPY CANADA DAY! HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

CanadaUSARiverdale (of Twilight Detective Agency) wishes you a happy celebration of your country, whether it be Canada or the United States!  Gargoyles don’t get tattoos– they get wing paintings, apparently!

A propos of this image, writer Michael McAdam and artist Mike Rieger will be attending ConVergence, in Minneapolis, MN, July 3-6!  Yes– Two Canadian Gargs will be all up in your United States for Independence Day!  Come see us at the convention, squirrelled away in Artist’s Alley.  We’ll have all the Twogargs.com comics, Mike’s art prints, magnets and more!  Come say “hi!”

CALGARY EXPO POST-CON REPORT!

Mayor Nenshi poses with celebrity Comic Expo guests!

Wow.  The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo was such a whirlwind weekend we’re still trying to process it all!

This year it was four days instead of three; there was a definite sense from the attendees of being grateful for the extra day in order to have time to see everything!  For us exhibitors, it took some getting used to:  Many of us were zombies on the Saturday as our bodies tried to convince us it was Sunday, and yet on Sunday we felt renewed and had extra energy!

Sales were brisk, and once again Twilight Detective Agency #1 sold out, telling us that Calgary sure loves its gargoyles!

Gargoyles fridge magnets were a hit, so look for another series of them coming out soon.

Debuting at this convention was Gloaming #1, written by Michael McAdam with art by Kyle Burles!  Our first foray into the Horror genre, it was well received by the crowd— very encouraging for both writer and artist!

Thunder issues 1-4 were available with #4 being new to the Calgary crowd; we were pleased to see readers return to get their next issue fix of our half Norse God half Canuck superhero! Artist Dean Meek is always pleased to hear of fans enjoying Mister Thunder.

Taking a moment to sing the praises of Jeremy Thew, artist on TDA and so many of the Twogargs promotional materials:  Jeremy flew up from Seattle to be at the convention, and it was his first time having a print book at the table!  We noticed it led to a lot of original sketch commissions— from Friday to Sunday all he did was draw!  The man is a MACHINE.  Jeremy is available for commissions via email as well— allow us to point you towards his DeviantArt account, his Tumblr, and you can also follow him on Twitter!  Affectionately termed “Jeremonkey” (a name he gave himself), all we can say is “Go Monkey, Go!”

As ever, being surrounded by the deluge of creative people and the colourful displays was inspiring and gave us ideas for the next convention, so we could be bigger and better!  It’s always such a rejuvenation to the creative spirit to come to these shows.  Twogargs would like to thank the folks at the #calgaryexpo , and the fans and readers who came by our table, for making it all fantastically worthwhile!  Bless you all!
